How to make fragrance last longer
Longevity depends on the formula, your skin and how you apply it. These habits help whatever is in your bottle.
Almost everyone has had a fragrance that seems to vanish within an hour. Some of that is the formula, some of it is you, and some of it is simply your nose getting used to a smell. Here is what you can actually control.
Start with the skin
Fragrance tends to cling better to skin that is moisturised than to dry skin. Apply an unscented lotion or balm first, or one from the same fragrance line if it has one. Skin is different for everyone, so the same bottle can last longer on one person than another.
Spray where it is warm
Pulse points such as the wrists, the inside of the elbows and the sides of the neck are warmer, which helps a scent open up and project. Spraying a little on your clothes can also extend a scent, because fabric holds fragrance for a long time. Test a small area first, as some perfumes can mark delicate or light-coloured fabrics.
Do not rub
Many people rub their wrists together after spraying. It is often said to break down the top notes faster. The evidence is thin, but there is no benefit either way, so spray, then let it settle on its own.
Choose the formula
- Concentration matters. An eau de parfum usually contains more fragrance oil than an eau de toilette, so it often lasts longer. It is a tendency, not a rule.
- Notes matter too. Heavier, deeper materials such as woods, resins, amber and vanilla generally last longer than light citrus and fresh notes, which are naturally quick to fade.
Do not trust your nose after an hour
After a while your nose stops registering a smell you are wearing. This is called olfactory fatigue, and it is why a scent can seem to disappear to you while others can still notice it. Ask someone you trust, or check again after stepping out of the room for a while.
Store it well
A bottle damaged by heat and light will not perform as it should. See our guide on how to store perfume.
