How to build a fragrance collection

You do not need dozens of bottles. A small, thoughtful collection covers more of your life than a large, random one.

A fragrance collection can be three bottles or thirty. What matters is that each one has a job. Here is a simple way to build a collection you will actually wear.

Start with the moments in your week

Think about when you wear fragrance: work, evenings out, weekends, special occasions. A collection that covers those moments will always feel useful.

A simple starter set

  • An everyday fragrance. Comfortable and easy to wear almost anywhere.
  • A fresh one for warm days. Lighter, brighter, good for summer and the gym bag.
  • A warm one for cold days and evenings. Richer, deeper, more noticeable.
  • A signature or occasion scent. The one you reach for when you want to feel your best.

Buy slowly

It is tempting to buy a lot at once, especially after watching reviews online. Slow down. Wear a sample for a few days, in different weather and moods, before you commit to a full bottle. Our guide on how to test a fragrance before buying covers this in more detail.

Keep it in good condition

Store your bottles away from heat and light. See how to store perfume.

Notice what you reach for

After a few months you will see a pattern. Some bottles get worn constantly, while others stay on the shelf. That is useful information: it tells you what to buy next, and what you may not need.

In Layer

Your Layer shelf shows your collection at a glance, and the journal shows which bottles you wear most.
