Choosing fragrance for the office
Work calls for a lighter touch. Here is how to wear fragrance in shared spaces without overwhelming anyone.
You can wear fragrance to work and be considerate at the same time. It mostly comes down to choosing something suitable and using the right amount.
Keep it close
In a shared office, the goal is a scent that people notice only when they are near you. One or two sprays is usually plenty, and a fragrance you apply to your chest or clothing sits closer than one sprayed on the neck.
Notes that tend to work well
- Fresh citrus, light woods and clean musks are easy to wear in most settings.
- Soft florals and tea or herbal notes feel calm and polished.
Notes to approach with care
- Very heavy or sweet fragrances can feel strong in a small room.
- Dense smoky, animalic or boozy scents are often better kept for the evening.
These are tendencies, not rules. Taste varies, and a fragrance you consider light might be strong to someone else.
Know your workplace
Some offices, hospitals, studios and other workplaces ask people to avoid fragrance, because of allergies or sensitivities. If in doubt, ask, and follow the policy.
Reapply sparingly
If you feel you cannot smell your fragrance any more, resist reapplying heavily. Your nose has probably adjusted. See how to apply perfume.
